A Backyard That Changed Character With the Weather
Some outdoor spaces disappear the moment the weather changes. Too hot in summer, too dark in winter, unusable the second rain hits the ground. That was the issue with this backyard in Keysborough. The clients had a generous 27sqm outdoor area, but it lacked the comfort and protection needed to make it part of daily life. They wanted something that could stay visually open and bright without sacrificing structural strength or durability.
Instead of closing the space off with a heavy insulated structure, the direction of this project focused on transparency and light. The goal was to create coverage without making the backyard feel smaller.
The Solution

The final build features a custom 9x3m flat clear roof system using Ez-Glaze panels paired with a carefully engineered aluminium framework. One of the biggest priorities was keeping the structure visually minimal while still capable of handling long-term exposure to changing Victorian weather conditions. To achieve that, the framework combined 90x90mm aluminium posts with a Probeam 140x50mm structural member and 100x50mm aluminium beams to maintain rigidity across the span without creating a bulky appearance overhead.

The roofing system itself became the defining feature of the build. Ez-Glaze panels allowed natural light to pass through the area throughout the day, dramatically changing how the space feels from inside the home and out in the backyard. Unlike darker roofing systems that create visual separation from the outdoors, the clear roofing keeps the area connected to the sky while still providing practical weather protection. During rainfall, the clients can still comfortably use the space without losing brightness underneath the structure.
Drainage and finishing details also played a major role in the overall outcome. A 200mm Edge Gutter system was integrated into the design to manage water efficiently during heavy rain while keeping the roofline clean and proportional to the structure. The result is a patio that feels lightweight visually, but performs like a permanent extension of the home.
The Results
Since completion, the area has shifted from being an occasionally used backyard section into a functional everyday living space. The low-maintenance materials from Palram and Stratco help keep upkeep minimal, while the clear roof design completely changes how the outdoor area feels across different times of the day and seasons. Rather than dominating the backyard, the structure quietly enhances it.
