Cooldek Insulated Patio Roofing Melbourne — Roof, Insulation & Ceiling In One

Sam Outdoor Living Cooldek Insulated Patio Roofing Melbourne — Roof, Insulation & Ceiling in One

What Is a Cooldek Insulated Roof?

Cooldek is Stratco’s insulated roofing panel — roof sheet, insulation core, and finished ceiling underside in one panel, instead of three separate trades bolting a roof, batts, and a ceiling lining together. It’s the panel most Melbourne patio and carport builders default to, and for good reason: install it once and you’ve got a weatherproof roof and a finished ceiling on the same day.

The EPS core sits bonded between a profiled steel topside and a smooth steel underside. That’s what does the actual work — it’s the insulation layer that keeps a north-facing patio usable at 2pm in February instead of turning it into a greenhouse, and keeps it from bleeding heat back out on a cold July night.

We build primarily with Stratco Cooldek, but we’re not locked to one brand. If your project calls for a different rib profile, a longer span, or a specific manufacturer’s warranty terms, we also install Bondor SolarSpan, Bondor InsulRoof, and Versiclad insulated roof panels — same sandwich-panel principle, different steel profile and spanning capability. We’ll tell you upfront which one actually suits your roof pitch and span, not just which one we have in stock.

Why Choose an Insulated Patio Roof?

  • ✔️ Superior Insulation: the EPS core cuts heat transfer through the roof, which is the single biggest source of summer heat load on an open patio.
  • ✔️ Strong and Stylish: profiled steel topside, smooth ceiling-like underside. No sarking, no separate ceiling sheet, no gap for pests to get into.
  • ✔️ Custom Options: a run of colours, roof profiles, and five insulation thicknesses, so you’re not stuck picking between “cheap and thin” or “one size fits all.”
  • ✔️ Smart Integration: built-in rebates in the panel hide wiring runs for downlights and ceiling fans, so you don’t end up with surface-mounted conduit across a ceiling you just paid to have look finished.

Cooldek vs. Bondor and Versiclad: Which Panel Actually Suits Your Roof

This is the question nobody answers straight, so here’s the short version.

Stratco Cooldek comes in Classic or CGI profile, spans well on standard patio and pergola structures, and it’s what we spec by default because parts, colours, and lead times are the most consistent of the three in Victoria right now.

Bondor SolarSpan runs a 34mm trapezoidal rib and handles lower roof pitches (down to around 2 degrees) with strong water-carrying capacity — worth it on a flat-leaning skillion where Cooldek’s profile would need a steeper fall. It also carries a 10-year manufacturer’s warranty and cyclonic-region approval, which matters if you’re building somewhere the local wind rating demands it.

Bondor InsulRoof uses a curved corrugated profile with a 19mm rib, but it needs a minimum 5-degree pitch — rule it out on anything close to flat.

Versiclad is the other panel we’ll spec when a project needs a specific span or budget position Stratco and Bondor don’t cover well. Same insulated sandwich-panel construction, COLORBOND steel skins either side.

Short version: tell us your roof pitch and span, and we’ll tell you which brand’s profile actually works — not which one’s easiest for us to order.

Panel Specifications

Cooldek is available in five insulation thicknesses. Thicker panel, higher R-value, but also more roof depth to work with at the fascia — worth checking against your eave height before you lock in a thickness.

Panel Thickness R-Value (up to)
50mm R1.42
75mm R2.16
100mm R2.77
125mm R3.41
150mm R4.04

Framing: Aluminium Posts and Beams

The roof panel is only as good as what’s holding it up. Our standard structural frame for insulated patio roofs runs:

  • Posts: 150 x 150 x 2.6mm aluminium SHS, grade 6063-T6 — the alloy spec used across the industry for load-bearing outdoor structural extrusion, chosen for the strength-to-corrosion-resistance ratio you need on an uncovered post exposed to weather year-round.
  • Beams: 150 x 50mm aluminium beam, sized and positioned according to your panel span and local wind loading.

Aluminium over timber or standard steel means no rust bleed staining the panel underside over time, and no timber movement working the roof fixings loose after a few Melbourne summers.

FAQ

Is Cooldek better than a standard colorbond roof with batts?

For a patio, yes — a combined panel skips the sarking, batts, and separate ceiling sheet, so you get a cleaner finish and fewer failure points (no batts sagging, no ceiling sheet staining from condensation).

What thickness do I actually need?

50mm and 75mm cover most open patios. Step up to 100mm or thicker if the space is enclosed (a sunroom, for example) and you’re relying on the roof for real thermal performance rather than just shade.

Can Cooldek go on a low-pitch roof?

Within limits — check your specific pitch against Stratco’s design guide. If your roof is close to flat, Bondor SolarSpan’s profile usually handles the lower pitch and water flow better.

Do you only install Stratco products?

No — we spec whichever of Cooldek, Bondor, or Versiclad actually fits your pitch, span, and budget. We’ll tell you which one and why before you commit.
